Mr. Luis C. Rico
Saginaw, Michigan
March 10, 1924 - August 27, 2009
Passed away Thursday, August 27, 2009, at Cartwright Hospice Center. Age 85 years. Luis was born on March 10, 1924 in San Antonio, TX to the late Louis and Carmen (Casares) Rico. He was married to Mary Escalante. Mary predeceased him in 2003. Luis served with the Civilian Conservation Corps, Company 3803. He then served as a PFC in the US Army as a rifleman with the 162nd Infantry Regiment, deployed in New Guinea, Pacific Theatre, during WWII. Luis retired from GM Malleable Iron and had worked as a Kiln Operator and was a proud member of the UAW Local 455. He was a longtime parishioner and usher at St. Mary Cathedral. He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Luis (Paula) Rico, San Antonio, TX; Albert (Xiaofang Xu) Rico, Fenton; Rosanne Rico, San Antonio, TX; Emilia (Elmer) Kuelske, Saginaw; Thomas (Ruth Borgelt) Rico, Haslett; and Lucy Gilchrist, Muncy, PA; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucy Lozano, San Antonio, TX; special friend, Angeline Rocha, Saginaw. Luis was also predeceased by a daughter, Linda Mae Rico, and three brothers, Felix, Jose, and Manuel Rico.
Funeral Liturgy will take place 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at St. Mary's Cathedral, 615 Hoyt Ave. Fr. James Bessert will officiate with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where military honor guard will be conducted under the auspices of American Legion Post 439. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Wakeman Funeral Home, Inc., 1218 N. Michigan Ave., on Monday from 3:00-7:00 p.m., where a prayer vigil will take place at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Greater Lansing Peace Education Center, 855 Grove St., East Lansing, MI 48823.
